Limburgs Roze Erfgoed: tussen viering en protest
𝘌𝘯𝘨𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘩 𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘸 - In het kader van de Queer Geschiedenismaand organiseert Tracé – Limburgs Samenlevingsarchief in samenwerking met het COC een interactieve paneldiscussie. Activisten van toen en nu, historici en onderzoekers gaan met elkaar in gesprek, en deelnemers krijgen de kans om vragen te stellen en actief mee te discussiëren. (Panelleden worden nog aangekondigd).
Tijdens de lezing staat centraal: wat kunnen we leren van de geschiedenis van queer activisme en welke lessen zijn relevant voor het heden? We onderzoeken hoe activisme in de jaren ’70 in Limburg begon, welke strategieën werden gebruikt om zichtbaarheid te creëren, en hoe de Limburgse roze gemeenschap in de jaren daarna hun stem liet horen. Aan de hand van items uit de collectie van Tracé wordt de verbinding met vandaag gelegd: welke items van toen zijn vandaag nog altijd relevant? Daarnaast wordt extra aandacht besteed aan de mini-expo over Roze Zaterdag 1979 in Roermond.

Joris
Joris Roosen is hoofd van de afdeling onderzoek en adjunct-directeur van Tracé. Daarnaast is hij als Assistant Professor verbonden aan Faculteit der Cultuur en Maatschappijwetenschappen van de Universiteit Maastricht en University College Maastricht. Hij promoveerde in 2020 aan de Universiteit Utrecht op een proefschrift over de demografische impact van de Zwarte Dood in het graafschap Henegouwen. Zijn huidige onderzoek heeft betrekking op de rurale geschiedenis van Limburg tijdens de vroegmoderne periode en meer in het bijzonder op de Maasvallei tijdens de achttiende eeuw. Naast zijn functie als hoofd van de afdeling onderzoek is hij ook redactiesecretaris van het Jaarboek van Tracé en de reeks Maaslandse Monografieën. Daarnaast is hij verbonden aan de Werkgroep Industrieel Erfgoed Limburg (WIEL) en de commissie Geschiedenis van ondernemingen en het ondernemen in Limburg (COOL).
Paul
Paul Westerneng (75), voormalig voorzitter van COC Limburg en oud-redactielid van het COC-ledenblad Antarctica, was samen met zijn man Hans Janssen eind jaren ’80 en gedurende de jaren ’90 een drijvende kracht achter de vereniging. Paul vervulde het voorzitterschap tot 1999. Ook daarna zijn zij beiden nauw betrokken gebleven bij COC Limburg. Een leuk detail: Hans Janssen is daarnaast een periode werkzaam geweest bij het SHCL (Sociaal Historisch Centrum voor Limburg)
Juan
Juan (hij/hem) is een Nicaraguaan die sinds 2022 in Maastricht woont. Hij is een queer arts en volksgezondheidsdeskundige die momenteel voor een Nederlandse ngo werkt. Juan zet zich met hart en ziel in voor (gezondheids)gelijkheid en rechtvaardigheid, en komt met name op voor de rechten van LGBTQIA+-mensen. Hij ondersteunt de organisatie van Pride Maastricht sinds 2025 en wil dat de komende jaren blijven doen. Juan wil Maastricht een LGBTQIA+-vriendelijke en veilige stad blijven maken.
Jaison
Jaison Senne Blok (non-binair/trans) (die/diens) (32) is sinds 2014 is actief voor de vereniging COC Limburg, begonnen als coördinator van de jongerenwerkgroep Expreszo, en een van de oprichters van de queer studentengroep Dionyx in 2016. In de jaren daarna is die PR-coördinator geweest, secretaris en voorzitter met circa 7 jaar in het bestuur. Jaison Senne Blok heeft in de afgelopen jaren de focus gelegd op het uitbreiden van het werkgebied over de hele provincie Limburg (met name het vergroten van de jongerenactiviteiten), het vergroten van Euregionale samenwerking, maar ook het meer toegankelijk en inclusief maken van COC Limburg. Jaison is momenteel werkzaam als bureaumanager bij Tracé en is actief betrokken bij de thematiek queer geschiedenis. Daarnaast is Jaison een van de onderzoekers van het project Queer Joy dat door de Universiteit Maastricht en COC Limburg momenteel wordt uitgevoerd.
Jurella
Jurrella Kleinmoedig werd geboren op Curaçao en verhuisde op haar twintigste naar Nederland, waar zij zestien jaar in Maastricht woonde. Inmiddels is zij geworteld in Weert, waar zij zich zowel professioneel als maatschappelijk actief inzet. In haar dagelijkse werk is Jurrella werkzaam bij de Rabobank als specialist Lease. Met ervaring bij meerdere Nederlandse banken in diverse functies beschikt zij over een brede financiële achtergrond en een scherp analytisch vermogen. Sinds 2017 is Jurrella politiek actief in haar woonstad Weert. Na de verkiezingen van 2018 startte zij als commissielid voor Weert Lokaal. In de bestuursperiode 2018–2022 vervulde zij tijdelijk de rol van raadslid, waarna zij in 2022 met voorkeursstemmen werd gekozen. Bij de afgelopen gemeenteraadsverkiezingen werd zij opnieuw verkozen. Sinds 2023 is zij fractievoorzitter van Weert Lokaal. Naast haar politieke werk zet Jurrella zich actief in voor de LHBTIQ+-gemeenschap. In 2018 richtte zij samen met een vriendin stichting B•Sassy op, die laagdrempelige activiteiten organiseert en een veilige, inclusieve ontmoetingsplek biedt.

As part of Queer History Month, Tracé – Limburgs Samenlevingsarchief in collaboration with COC, we are organising an interactive panel discussion. Activists from past and present, historians and researchers will engage in conversation with one another, while participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and actively join the discussion. (Panel members to be announced).
The talk will focus on the following question: what can we learn from the history of queer activism, and which lessons remain relevant today? We will explore how activism in Limburg began in the 1970s, which strategies were used to create visibility, and how the Limburg LGBTQ+ community made their voices heard in the decades that followed. Using items from our collection, connections will be drawn with the present day: which objects from the past continue to resonate today? Special attention will also be given to the mini-exhibition on Roze Zaterdag 1979 in Roermond.
The panel discussion is open to everyone and will be of interest to both younger and older audiences. Real-time English translation will be available via headsets. This event is free of charge; registration is possible by sending an email to info@tracelimburg.nl.

Joris
Joris Roosen is Head of Research and Deputy Director at Tracé. He is also an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Culture and Social Sciences at Maastricht University and University College Maastricht. He obtained his PhD in 2020 from Utrecht University with a thesis on the demographic impact of the Black Death in the county of Hainaut. His current research focuses on the rural history of Limburg during the early modern period and, more specifically, on the Meuse Valley during the eighteenth century. In addition to his role as head of the research department, he is also editorial secretary of the Tracé Yearbook and the Maasland Monographs series. He is also affiliated with the Limburg Industrial Heritage Working Group (WIEL) and the Committee on the History of Enterprises and Entrepreneurship in Limburg (COOL
Paul
Paul Westerneng (75), former chair of COC Limburg and former editorial board member of the COC members’ magazine *Antarctica*, was, together with his husband Hans Janssen, a driving force behind the association in the late 1980s and throughout the 1990s. Paul held the chairmanship until 1999. Even after that, both remained closely involved with COC Limburg. An interesting detail: Hans Janssen also worked for a period at the SHCL (Social History Centre for Limburg).
Juan
Juan (he/him) is a Nicaraguan resident of Maastricht since 2022. He is a queer medical doctor and public health professional currently working for a Dutch NGO. Juan is passionate about (health) equity and justice, and particularly advocates for the rights of LGBTQIA+ people. He has supported the organization of Pride Maastricht since 2025 and aims to continue doing it for the years to come. Juan wants to continue making Maastricht a LGBTQIA+ friendly and safe city.
Jaison
Jaison Senne Blok (non-binary/trans) (they/them) (32) has been active with the COC Limburg association since 2014, starting as coordinator of the youth working group Expreszo, and was one of the founders of the queer student group Dionyx in 2016. In the years that followed, they served as PR coordinator, secretary and chair, spending around seven years on the board. In recent years, Jaison Senne Blok has focused on expanding the organisation’s reach across the whole of Limburg province (particularly by increasing youth activities), strengthening Euregional cooperation, and making COC Limburg more accessible and inclusive. Jaison currently works as an office manager at Tracé and is actively involved in the field of queer history. In addition, Jaison is one of the researchers on the Queer Joy project, which is currently being carried out by Maastricht University and COC Limburg.
Jurella
Jurrella Kleinmoedig was born in Curaçao and moved to the Netherlands at the age of twenty, where she lived in Maastricht for sixteen years. She is now settled in Weert, where she is actively involved in both professional and community life. In her day job, Jurrella works at Rabobank as a leasing specialist. With experience at several Dutch banks in various roles, she has a broad financial background and sharp analytical skills. Jurrella has been politically active in her home town of Weert since 2017. Following the 2018 elections, she began as a committee member for Weert Lokaal. During the 2018–2022 term, she temporarily served as a councillor, after which she was elected by preferential votes in 2022. She was re-elected in the recent local council elections. Since 2023, she has been the group leader of Weert Lokaal. Alongside her political work, Jurrella is actively committed to the LGBTIQ+ community. In 2018, she and a friend founded the B•Sassy foundation, which organises accessible activities and provides a safe, inclusive meeting place.
