In samenwerking met studenten van de master Arts & Culture aan de Universiteit Maastricht presenteert Tracé, Verhalen uit een brievenbus: Een tentoonstelling over menselijke verbindingen. Al meer dan vijftig jaar verzamelt en ontvangt Rod Summers mail art. Ontdek de verhalen uit zijn brievenbus!
De mail art-collectie is het allereerste kunstarchief van Tracé, en niet zonder reden. Toen Summers op zoek was naar een permanente plek voor zijn collectie na de tentoonstelling “Everything that came in got an answer” in het Bonnefantenmuseum (2023-2024), voelde een eenmalige museale presentatie niet als de juiste oplossing. Hij wilde meer: een plek waar de kunst bewaard, bestudeerd en actief mee gewerkt kon worden. Tracé bleek de perfecte match, met een missie om het levende karakter van het archief en het belang ervan voor cultureel behoud te benadrukken.
Mail art is voor veel mensen onbekend. Voor Rod Summers is het net zo vanzelfsprekend als tandenpoetsen, maar voor veel mensen – inclusief de FaSoS-masterstudenten die aan deze tentoonstelling meewerken – is het onduidelijk waar je tegenwoordig nog een postzegel koopt. Na het doorzoeken van het archief ontdekten de studenten dat mail art, eenvoudig gezegd, elke artistieke uiting is die via de post wordt uitgewisseld. En dat je onderweg veel penvrienden verzamelt.
Voor Summers draait mail art om wat er in je leeft. “Het hoeft geen specifieke boodschap te zijn. Maak gewoon iets dat je raakt,” zegt hij. Hij houdt juist zo veel van deze kunstvorm omdat deze democratisch en verbindend is: iedereen kan meedoen.
Bij je bezoek aan de tentoonstelling is het belangrijk om te weten dat je mail art zult zien die Summers heeft ontvangen, niet zelf gemaakt. Je maakt een reis langs de verschillende vormen van mail art: de manieren waarop mensen zich uitdrukken en ideeën uitwisselen. Je verkent onderwerpen van collaboratieve Japanse stempelkunst, leuke momenten van interculturele verbinding, en sleutelmomenten uit de geschiedenis, zoals de COVID-19-pandemie, die emoties en verhalen naar boven brachten. Tijdens je ontdekkingstocht maak je zelf een ansichtkaart om een herinnering vast te leggen en mee naar huis te nemen.
Tot slot: op de openingsdag hoor je niet alleen Rod Summers zelf spreken, maar is er ook een workshop waarin je je eigen mail art kunt maken. Zie hieronder voor de details:

In collaboration with Maastricht University Arts & Culture MA students, Tracé, Limburg’s social history archive, is pleased to present Stories from a Mailbox: An exhibition on human connections [on paper]. Courtesy of Maastricht-based artist Rod Summers’ sending and receiving mail art for over fifty years, this collection invites you to explore the stories from his mailbox.
The mail art collection is Tracé’s first-ever art archive, and decisively so. When Summers was looking for his collection’s permanent home following Bonnefanten’s “Everything that came in got an answer,” (2023-2024), another one-time museum exhibition didn’t feel quite right. He wanted something more—somewhere the art could be stored, studied, and actively engaged with. Tracé was just the right fit, eager to convey the aliveness of the archive and its importance in cultural preservation.
If you’ve never heard of mail art, you wouldn’t be alone. While for Summers, the artistic practice is as habitual and institutional as brushing one’s teeth, for many others, including the FaSoS master’s students collaborating with Tracé to launch the exhibition, it’s difficult to even know where to buy a stamp. But after the students sorted through the archive for themselves, they learned that mail art, put simply, is any modality of artist expression exchanged via post. And collecting many pen pals along the way.
For Summers, mail art is about what’s inside of you. “It doesn’t have to be a specific message. Make anything that moves you,” he says. He loves it so much precisely because of how democratic and interconnected the practice is—anyone can participate.
When you arrive at the exhibition, it’s important to understand that you will be engaging with mail art that Summer’s has received, not produced. You will take a journey through the various forms of mail art, all the different ways people choose to express themselves and exchange ideas. This will include exploring stations ranging from collaboratively stamped Japanese art, fun moments of cross-cultural human connection, and key historical moments like COVID-19, which ultimately enables emotions. Throughout this discovery, you will simultaneously create your own postcard to capture a memory and take home with you.
In conclusion, on opening day, not only will we hear from Summers himself, but there will also be an opportunity to workshop your very own mail art. Please see below for event details:
